(Detroit, MI) -- Roughly 40 Detroit Public School students joined some Detroit Firefighters Saturday in an effort to rally against blight in the west side neighborhood near Cody High School and Dixon Educational Learning Academy. The rally took place near Burt Road and Tireman, which is a block where nearly every home is abandoned, burned, or the yard has overgrown. That's a concern to both the firefighters and the students who have to walk through the area five days a week. Detroit's Fire Department has already been working with DPS in an effort to identify areas considered as dangerous walks to school, and come up with solutions to improve those walks. The next step for the partnership is to board up close to 20 abandoned homes in the neighborhood.
