Mother Of East Detroit Student Who Drowned Files Lawsuit

(Eastpointe, MI) -- The mother of a 14-year-old East Detroit High School student who drowned during a swim class in November is filing a lawsuit. Yesterday, Lakisha Swift filed the suit citing negligence against swim monitor Jonathan Sails, the East Detroit School district and school officials in the death of KeAir Swift. Sails has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and prosecutors say he was not certified as required by state law and was not close enough to the pool when the teen began to struggle. He is due back in court March 19th for a preliminary exam.
