Plan To Double Parking Fines In Detroit

Plan To Double Parking Fines In Detroit
(Detroit, MI) -- Fines for parking tickets in Detroit could double under a plan proposed yesterday by emergency manager Kevyn Orr. If approved, a ticket for parking at an expired meter would go from 20-dollars to 45-dollars with an early payment discount eliminated all together. Other fees would increase as well much to the dismay of many Detroiters. In the Detroit Free Press resident Cornell Squires expresses his opposition to the plan saying, quote, "We're living in a very depressed city where 50-percent are below the poverty lever. You're taking more from the people." Orr says, though, that the increase could cover processing costs and generate about six-million dollars a year.
